Will you take a carrot or a stick?
There are two thinking tools—two techniques—I use in my mind whenever I’m hung up on the how‑to and I’ve left the want‑to behind. I use them to strengthen my intention.
One way is the harsher, negative‑motivation way, and that is asking myself, if I had to do this—if I had to sell a certain amount of product or if I had to raise a certain amount of money or if I had to have a great relationship with this person—what would I do? What steps would I take? What if someone put a handgun to my head and I had to do this to stay alive? I picture that. And then I start to brainstorm with myself. Soon I am furiously writing down the people I need to communicate with and the actions I need to take right now.
The other thinking tool is more positive. It also works for me. It goes like this: I imagine that someone just offered me a million dollars if I get this done. Will I accept the challenge?
Yes indeed.
If I knew that I would get a million dollars if I did this—this thing that I don’t now even know how to do (I am thinking), this thing that I think is so hard and frustrating that I’ve been trying to start doing for a long time . . . Well—if I thought I was getting a million dollars for it, how would I approach it differently? What would I do differently right now?
These brainstorming games work. Because they kick me out of the how‑to and put me in the middle of my strongest want‑to.
